6.Marine Engine Governor

What is marine engine ?

Diesel engines used in ships, tugs and boats at sea are called marine engines. Ships always sail in sea water for many years. Electricity, lighting and machinery for ship propulsion are generated by a number of diesel engines on the board. Hence a high efficiency diesel engine is provided to rotate the propellers. These engines are specially designed to withstand oscillations. Ship machinery, equipment, propeller, galley, air condition etc. are powered by main and auxiliary diesel engines generators.

Marine Engine Governors

Diesel engine RPM and some important engine parameters are automatically controlled by governors. A large ship has a high-efficiency diesel engine to rotate heavy propellers, so the governors are large in size with high torque. If any governor fails, the ship must be stopped at sea. Some ships have spare governors for immediate replacement. Otherwise sail to next port by manual maneuver.

Mostly Main Engine Hydro-Mechanical Governors Woodward Make UG40, PGA 200, PGA 500, PGG 200, PGEG 200 etc., Auxiliary Engine Generator Governors Woodward Make UG8, PSG, SG Actuators EG6P, EG3P , TM 25, UGA. Europa makes 1102, 1131.

Electronic Governors

The manufactures designs electronic governors and makes hydro-mechanical governors obsolete. They introduced an electronic governing system with three main components. The life cycle is shorter than that of hydro-mechanical governors. Basically if there any governor or engine problems in the ship, it is very difficult to diagnose and fix the problem. Hydro-mechanical governor is one unit, spare governor is immediately replaceable. Electronic governing system consists of three main parts such as electronic governor, actuator and magnetic pick-up, so troubleshooting on site is complicated.

PR Governors (INDIA)

PR Governors started manufacturing a variety of hydro-mechanical governor models G 840, G-840 MS and electronic governors model EG 2019, HG-AC indigenously at a reasonable price equivalent to the aforementioned Woodward and Europa governors. We retrofit our governors to replace outdated hydro mechanical governors, also replaced some electronic governors with our hydro-mechanical governors for some marine engines.
