Sugar mills generate steam through burning then waste bagasse after extracting sugar cane juice. Steam is used to spin heavy mill turbines to crush sugarcane and to generate electricity to power the entire mill. The RPM of the turbines is instantly controlled by the governors according to the load. Governors are highly sensitive and manufactured only by developed countries.
40 years ago mechanical governors were used in steam turbines to crush sugar cane and extract juice from it. Each turbine is equipped with a governor to control the RPM of the turbine. Mechanical governors have some technical problems. (A few more old sugar mill turbines are driven by mechanical governors)
30 years ago manufacturers developed hydro-mechanical governors to replace mechanical governors. Hydro-mechanical governors are highly reliable and can be understood and serviced by expert mechanics. Periodic service extends the life of the governor beyond 50 years or until the turbine is removed or damaged.
At present most of the sugar mills have many mill turbines with hydro- mechanical governors except co-gen plants. Commonly used Woodward Governors type , UG 8, UG 40, PGPL , TG-13, TG- 17, Actuators TG-13E, TG 17E, Europa Governors 1102, 1104,1131,1141, EHP-34 and Russian Governor OPH-30.
The manufactures designs electronic governors and makes hydro-mechanical governors obsolete. Electronic governors are more accurate but more expensive. Electronic governors are suitable for turbine generators of high capacity above 15 MW, generators parallel with grid as well as multiple generator parallel operations.
Hydro mechanical governors are suitable for 200 KW to 5 MW steam turbine generators, steam turbines coupled with pumps, blowers, compressors and sugarcane crushing mill turbines.
PR Governors started manufacturing a wide variety of hydro-mechanical governor models G 840, G-840 MS, and electronic governors model EG 2019, HG-AC indigenously at a reasonable cost equivalent to the above Woodward and Europa governors. We retrofit our governors that need replacing mechanical governors and obsolete hydro-mechanical governors. Few turbine manufacturers purchase our governor for their turbines.
