40 years ago mechanical governors were used in steam turbines to
crush sugar cane and extract juice from it. Each turbine is equipped
with a governor to control the RPM of the turbine. Mechanical governors
have some technical problems. (A few more old sugar mill turbines are driven by mechanical governors)
30 years ago manufacturers developed hydro-mechanical governors to
replace mechanical governors. Hydro-mechanical governors are highly
reliable and can be understood and serviced by expert mechanics. Periodic
service extends the life of the governor beyond 50 years or until the turbine is removed or damaged.
At present most of the sugar mills have many mill turbines with hydro- mechanical
governors except co-gen plants. Commonly used Woodward Governors type ,
UG 8, UG 40, PGPL , TG-13, TG- 17, Actuators TG-13E, TG 17E, Europa Governors 1102,
1104,1131,1141, EHP-34 and Russian Governor OPH-30.
